we invite applications for postdoctoral fellowships within the newly established department “Social Foundations of Computation” at the Max-Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems, Tuebingen, Germany. The department focuses on the principled design, use, and evaluation of machine learning, prediction, and algorithmic decision making in social contexts.
Appointments can vary in length from 1 year to up to 5 years. Postdoctoral researchers have complete academic freedom, no teaching or service obligations, and enjoy access to generous scientific budgets for academic travel, compute, experimentation, and data collection efforts.
The institute is located near Stuttgart in the historic city of Tübingen, a beautiful university town in the southwest of Germany, tucked against a vast nature park. Embedded in Tübingen's rapidly growing science and technology campus, the institute has close ties to ELLIS, a Europe-wide research network in machine learning, the Cyber Valley initiative that connects researchers with startups and industry in the area, as well as the Tübingen AI Center, home to numerous leading AI researchers. Cities including Zurich, Munich and Frankfurt are within a few hours by public transportation. Serving direct flights to major European cities, Stuttgart airport is within half an hour.
Diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging are core values on our campus and in our recruiting efforts. All qualified applicants will receive consideration without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or age. The institute strongly encourages applications from groups underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
